Agmatine Overview
Agmatine is a substance found naturally in the body and is produced from its precursor amino acid, L-arginine, which is found in nuts, dairy, and some meats.
One of agmatine’s primary benefits is that it regulates high levels of nitric oxide, also known as NO, in the body by inhibiting the enzymes which break down NO. Increased nitric oxide levels have several benefits, such as increased blood flow. This provides the “pumped” feeling you get when lifting weights.
L-Arginine or Agmatine?
L-arginine also produces nitric oxide. So why supplement with on over the other, and why not just eat foods containing arginine?
The answer is in the agmatine’s higher efficiency of elevating NO levels and the fact that agmatine benefits the body in areas outside of workouts. It’s also a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator. Studies have linked it to memory formation and learning.
Agmatine Dosage
Individuals should take agmatine in 500 mg doses. Some individuals prefer to use agmatine in a cyclical manner, such as 3 days on and 1 day off or 5 days on and 2 days off, in order to help minimize tolerance build up.
For maximum dosing efficiency, take around 5mg per kg of body weight. This chart breaks down how much agmatine to take for each weight range:
Pounds | Kilograms | Dosage (mg) |
---|---|---|
100 | 45.5 | 227 |
125 | 56.8 | 284 |
150 | 68 | 341 |
175 | 79.5 | 398 |
200 | 90.9 | 455 |
225 | 102.3 | 511 |
250 | 113.6 | 568 |
275 | 125 | 625 |
300 | 136.4 | 682 |
